YARD PERSON

PART-TIME

HOURS: 6:30AM to 6:00PM (Mon – Fri)

8:00AM to 4:00PM (Sat – Sun)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Yard Person is responsible for providing best in class service to a wide variety of customers, while maintaining the lumberyard. Loading and unloading building materials, storing them in the proper locations, and carefully administering corresponding invoices and transfer documents. These tasks are accomplished by using a variety of equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, lumber carts, etc. This position mandates a solid understanding of building supply inventory, prices, returns and exchange policies.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Identify and assist customers with advice, information, and/or help in gathering and loading orders.

 Load and unload materials.

 Take all necessary safety precautions when handling freight, tools, and equipment.

 Store material in correct locations in the yard.

 Keep the yard clean and the inventory neat and orderly.

 Be familiar with the locations(s) of all inventory and equipment.

 Be familiar with the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, including forklift, lumber cart, pallet jack, banding machine, etc.

 Assist customers in handling large or heavy items.

 Resolve customer complaints.

 Be aware of theft and take action, in line with company policy, to report or discourage it.

 Restock lumber bins, sheds, etc. when they are depleted.

 Deliver purchases and/or pick up returned goods when necessary

 Receive incoming merchandise.

 Check incoming merchandise against orders or invoices, identify damaged goods, shortages, and backorders.

 Report any shortages, damaged goods, and backorders to your supervisor.

 Make suggestions for rule, policy, and/or procedure changes when you think that such changes will improve efficiency, morale, profits, sales, etc.

 Help in training new employees.

 Work on any special projects assigned by your supervisor, after determining their priority in relation to your other duties.

 Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.

 Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected

Supervisor Assigned DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

At anytime your supervisor may request your support with the following.

 Work toward a completed daily list of the stores Minimum Acceptable Daily Customer Experience & Operating Standards.

 Follow procedures and maintain standards according to store policy in the following areas: loss prevention, receiving and pricing goods, merchandise handling and presentation, housekeeping, and restocking shelves.

 Advise the designated manager of shortages, damaged goods, back-orders etc.

 Help unload incoming trucks.

 Build special displays and signage for sales, promotions and other special events.

 Remove sales and promotional displays, prices etc. and rearrange stock following promotional events.

 Always take appropriate safety precautions when cutting pipe, glass, wire mesh, making keys etc., and make an effort to minimize waste.

 Check incoming merchandise against invoices to spot shortages, damaged goods, back-orders, etc.

 Willingness to continually develop professional skills and knowledge base.

 Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.

 Friendly and helpful attitude toward customers.

 Good mathematical skills.

 Must be able to communicate effectively and persuasively with employees, management, and customers.

 Willingness to learn.

 This position requires possession of, or training completion for Forklift License and Fall Arrest Training.

 Drivers License required.

 Prior retail experience beneficial.

 High School graduate or equivalent.

 Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

 Reports directly to the Yard Manager

  • Mark stock items using identification tags, stamps, electric marking tools, or other labeling equipment.
  • Provide assistance or direction to other stockroom, warehouse, or storage yard workers.
